Introduction
Telescope´s Characteristics
The Sky-Watcher FlexTube 300P Telescope is a is a reflecting telescope (uses mirrors) Dobsonian type (Circular base, moves from top to bottom and from one side to the other).
The box comes with 2 parts, the Optical Tube Assembly (the actual telescope) and the Base.
The base weighs about 17 kilos (37.4 lbs), has a diameter of 64 cm (25.2 in) and a height of 74 cm (29.1 in).
The telescope (Optical Tube Assembly- OTA) weighs about 21 kilos (46.3 lbs), has a diameter of 30 cm (12 in) and an adjustable height that ranges from 92 cm ( 36.2 in) retracted up to 1.50 meters (59 in) when extended.
Telescope and Mount Configuration
The FlexTube 300P telescope uses a Dobsonian mount, which is a circular base that allows the telescope to move in a horizontal and vertical axis. This makes it easier to find and track celestial objects in the sky.
This telescope is a reflector, which means it uses a 12 inch (30 cm) diameter primary mirror to collect light and reflect it off a secondary mirror before reaching the eyepieces.
Included Accesories
The FlexTube 300P telescope comes with a couple of eyepieces: a 25 millimeters one and a 10 millimeters one. These eyepieces offer magnifications of around 60X and 150X respectively. Also included is a 9x50 Optical Finderscope to locate objects in the sky.
Accepted Eyepiece Sizes and Adapters
The telescope accepts standard 1.25-inch eyepieces and 2-inch eyepieces thanks to two adapters includedfor both sizes. This provides flexibility in the selesction of eyepieces and in the magnification of the observations.
PROS AND CONS
PROS:
- Clear Images: The telescope's large aperture provides sharp, detailed images.
- Ease of Assembly: The assembly is relatively simple, even for beginners.
- Retractable Design: The telescope can be collapsed for easy transport.
CONS:
- Weight: The entire telescope and base weight together around 80 lbs (40 kg), which can be difficult to handle and move around.
- Constant Collimation required: Vibration during transportation may require periodic alignments of the mirrors.
- Space in the Car: The telescope can take up significant space in the car or truck, limiting passenger capacity.
Conclusion
We must highlight the clarity of the images offered by the FlexTube 300P (for Visual Astronomy as this device is NOT designed for Astrophotography), its ease of use and its retractable capacity. Despite these drawbacks, this telescope is a worthwhile investment for astronomy enthusiasts looking to explore the sky in quality and detail.
